Kanan Gill unplugged

wrote codes as software engineer for 3 years before quitting for a career in comedy

Hyderabad: The turnout on Day 1 of the Windsong Music Fest in the city was thin, but stand-up comedian Kanan Gill of The Pretentious Movie Reviews fame wasn’t disappointed. “Everyone was, at least, receptive (of his performance). That’s what matters.” And if you wondered what the Bengaluru-based comic artiste was doing at a music fest, well, Kanan is a guitarist, a vocalist and has a three-member music band NYEH. The band is unique as it churns out comedy rock songs.

The 24-year-old, in fact, has multiple interests:
He draws and is planning to launch a comic strip. He always wanted to be an author and he’s been writing and rewriting a book since Class XI. He’s got a blog called Cheesecake, through which he first tasted success online. He also wrote codes as an software engineer for three years before he quit it all for a career in comedy. He’s a fitness freak too!

“Yeah, not many know that I sing too,” says Kanan who was initially called in by the organisers to do stand-up comedy, but asked for his band to be given a chance instead. “I had a little bit of clout,” chuckles Kanan who was also the emcee at the event.

Yes, life has changed a lot for Kanan in the last one year — ever since he and fellow stand-up comedian Biswa Kalyan Rath spoof reviewed films like Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon and Prem Aggan among others. Actress Sonakshi Sinha is their fan too.

“Last year, I was doing a 9 to 9 job. I could walk into any party in Bengaluru, but now it’s different. I travel a lot for shows, people recognise me and want photos and autographs with me,” says Kanan, who is also getting a lot of ad offers, but doesn’t wish to take them up. He was seen in an advertisement recently and also gets invited by companies and colleges to share success of his YouTube channel, Kanan Gill, where he uploads the reviews.

So, what’s the next movie? “I can’t reveal it. I am slightly superstitious,” he says letting us in on one of his pet superstitions, “I wear brightly coloured socks before I go to perform. I have 5-6 of them!”
