Train suspended due to wind velocity

Two trains make abrupt halt at Pamban, Mandapam

Rameswaram: Train services to and from Rameswaram were suspended owing to the high velocity of wind reported at Pamban rail bridge on Friday.

As winds blew at the rate of 60 kmph in the Gulf of Mannar since Thursday night, rail transport at Pamban bridge was stopped since then.

Sethu Express proceeding from Chennai was halted at Mandapam early in the morning on Friday. Madurai-bound passenger train that started from Rameswaram was stopped at Pamban. Rail passengers were put to inconvenience because of the abrupt train halt.

Further, railway officials said due to more than 60 kmph winds in Pamban from 3.55 am till 10.40 am, some train services to and from the pilgrim coastal town were delayed by two to three hours.

They also said that anemometers have been installed on both sides of the Pamban railway bridge to help ensure passenger safety. The system turns the signal to red (danger) automatically if the velocity of the wind exceeds more than 60 kilometre per hour.
