New Delhi: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Majeed Memon on Saturday said the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) Government in West Bengal has every right to challenge the Calcutta High Court's order granting permission to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah to hold a rally in Kolkata.
"Well such situations are confrontations between two sides, one is right to freedom of speech and expression and right to move freely and hold public meetings, and on the other side is the right of the state to ensure safety, security and law and order. So, the local government thought that permitting Mr. Shah to hold a rally in a particular area would result in a breach of peace and that is how the local administration denied the permission to Mr. Amit Shah to hold the rally," Memon told ANI here.
"But they have gone to the court and the court has given some relief to them. Now, if the TMC or the administration feels aggrieved by that order, they have every right to challenge it. But since the rally is expected to be held tomorrow, they have very little time to challenge it and get a kind of a relief in this context," he added.
The Calcutta High Court has granted Shah permission to hold a rally in Kolkata on Sunday.
Justice Debangshu Basak, who gave the permission, named two special officers to ensure that the BJP complies with all the rules.
The Police Commissioner has also been asked to depute an officer to assist them.
The West Bengal Government is considering to move before the division bench against the single bench court order.
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation had earlier on Thursday denied permission to Shah to hold a rally in the city, thereby deepening the feud between the TMC and the BJP.
