Bengaluru: The opportunity to stave off defeat they say lies in one’s hands. On Monday, as the IBSF World Snooker Championships headed towards the business end of the league stage, some fancied Indian players let go of opportunities that came their way and crashed to defeats.
At the Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium, Kamal Chawla, Manan Chandra and Vidya Pillai suffered their first losses, while the in-form Amee Kamani was upset by compatriot Arantxa Sanchis. But given their performance in the round robin league earlier, all of them sailed into the knockout round.
Chawla fought hard in his last league engagement against Ang Boon Chin before finally going down 3-4.
Also ending on the losing side was Delhite Manan Chandra, who found a worthy opponent in 20-year-old Welsh player Jamie Clarke, winner by a 4-2 margin. The 33-year-old Chandra was far from his best and the fact that Clarke was silken smooth with his potting added to his woes, especially in the third and fourth frame which went 67-0, 69-0 in Clarke’s favour.
On the women’s side, Arantxa Sanchis edged past the in-form Amee 3-2 to cause an upset in an all-Indian contest.
