Rush of BJP leaders for plum postings

PM reportedly told to focus on good governance rather appointing partymen to boards

Bengaluru: Just like leaders and workers of the ruling Congress, several aspirants in BJP could find it tough to land plum posts in various boards managed by the Union government following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s instructions to his cabinet colleagues that they should focus more on good governance than on such appointments.

Sources in the state BJP said president Pralhad Joshi received applications from aspirants for positions in Central Silk Board, Coffee Board, Censor Board, Coir Board, District Telecom Advisory Boards, Divisional and Zonal Railways User Boards.

Though some names were proposed to the party’s central leadership, none was cleared as senior leaders informed the state unit that Mr. Modi was in no mood to make these appointments at this juncture.

Sources said Mr. Modi reportedly told his ministerial colleagues to focus on good governance rather than appointing partymen to these boards. The upshot: all aspirants could be forced to wait for at least six months.

Besides, Mr. Modi’s decision to shift Mr. D.V. Sadananda Gowda from railways to law and justice was a setback for many hopefuls as they were pressurizing the minister to appoint them to the Railway Board.

For some aspirants, Mr. Gowda’s new portfolio has triggered hopes of securing the positions of notaries and standing counsels of the Union government in lower courts as well as the high court.
