New capital may not have hills

Rock material needed to fill low-laying areas

Vijayawada: The hills in the capital region are facing destruction due to the development of the capital. The mandals of Tulluru, Tadepalli and Tadikonda, where the capital will be located, has sizeable hillocks.

According to construction experts, a huge volume of rock and mud will be needed for filling low-lying areas and to build roads in the capital.

The Government has proposed 30,000 acres for the capital, covering 29 villages. According to construction norms, at least 20 per cent of the total area or 6,000 acres should be allotted for roads.

The entire area for roads should be filled with rock and sandy material for 10 feet, said Vijayawada Builders Association president, G Raja Lingam. However, he said that there is no need to level out the entire capital area.

New technologies are available for road construction, but local material will be utilised for laying and increasing height of roads.

Several hills belonging to the Revenue Department are already being quarried for roads and other construction activities.

The hills in the capital region might also face the same fate, said V Rami Reddy who works as a civil engineer with a major construction company.

Kommareddy Vaas, who worked earlier as planner for a foreign construction company, said even using foreign technology for constructions, there is no alternative step to increase the road level, but to fill low-lying land with locally available materials.

On the other hand, several capital villages are facing inundation from Kondaveeti Vaagu. The irrigation experts have also recommended filling the inundation areas in the particular area.

The forest department has also hills in Tadepalli, Pedamadduru, Lemalli, Mothadaka, Mangalagiri, Karlapudi, villages that are also near the capital location.

Guntur district forest officer, K Lohitaakshudu, said that the reserve forest is also in some areas and as per Act they would not allow dismantling for any purpose.

Krishna Delta Rytanaga Parirakshana Samithi president, K Sivaji, said that that greenery would anyway vanish; an attempt must be made to protect the hills.
