Power shortage hits railway line

The failure of KSEB to supply five mega watts to the railway’s Uppala sub-station is the bottleneck
KOZHIKODE: The deadline set by the railways for the completion of Shornur-Mangalore electrification is likely to extend beyond March 2015, according to officials. The failure of KSEB to supply five mega watts to the railway’s Uppala sub-station is the bottleneck.
The 153-kilometre, Kannur-Mangalore electrification has been completed down-the-line towards Mangalore and 80 per cent completed on the up-the-line direction. “The work has been progressing on a war-footing. But KSEB’s apathy could push the materialization of the line further,” deputy chief engineer (electrification) V.K. Manoharan told Deccan Chronicle. The hindrance at Kasargod should also affect the entire Shornur-Mangalore stretch as barring a few trains all on the route are terminating operation at Mangalore.
KSEB Kasargod deputy chief engineer, Bhuvanachandra Prasad admitted that supplying of five mega watts of power round-the-clock was not feasible in Kasargod given its electricity shortage. “We have been emphasizing on laying a 220-KV line from Puttur substation (Karnataka) to Mylatti which is just 40 km away,” he added.
