Shoaib Malik is my Bond: Sania Mirza

Sania Mirza talks about her love for the Bond movies
Hyderabad: There’s a new connection between James Bond and tennis other than Vijay Amritraj’s cameo in Octopussy — Sania Mirza. And the tennis-star seems to easily fit in the role of a Bond girl. Sania will be giving tips on how to woo a woman, on the Sony Pix series, Pix School of BONDing.
This was the first time Sania faced the camera for a TV series and she laughs when we ask her how the shoot went, “I was quite bad on the first day, there were plenty of re-takes, but over the days I got comfortable and the shoot got better,” she says.
And did her friends from showbiz give her any advice while shooting? “They were teasing me when they heard about this project, but they were very supportive. Since there isn’t a lot of acting, it wasn’t difficult. I just had to get used to it,” she says.
With her career on-court going really well, how did she find time for the show? “The show happened at the right time, I had just got done with my matches and had a few free weeks, so I took up the project,” she says.
Sania has always seemed confident in front of the camera, however, she confesses that she will never work in a film, “I’m too shy for that. Interviews are fine but acting is not really my cup of tea,” she says. The tennis star has had a successful end to the year and she has quite a lot to add to her autobiography that is still being worked on.
She says, “I have finished writing up to the year 2012 but beyond that I haven’t had the time. This year has been crucial so once I find time I’m going to finish the other two years as well.”
A self-confessed fan of the James Bond movies, Pierce Brosnan is Sania’s favourite Bond and Halle Berry her favourite Bond girl. When the topic of James Bond comes up, it’s very hard to not ask her who her real life James Bond is and she starts turning pink. “Obviously, my Bond is in Pakistan, my husband, Shoaib,” she laughs.
With both Shoaib and Sania having such a busy schedule, does it get frustrating considering that they are hardly together? “Well, it does sometimes, but there is not much that we can do. We try to meet as often as possible, I recently flew to Dubai to meet him,” she says, adding, “We both want to make the most of our career right now; after a while we might retire, then we’ll have a lot of time to ourselves, so right now, we’re concentrating on work,” she smiles.
