North south divide surfaces in Telangana state

The TRS government declared both as state festivals

Hyderabad: Fissures are beginning to show between North and South Telangana leaders.

Congress legislator G. Chinna Reddy alleged in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday that the ruling TRS was trying to force the culture of the northern districts upon people of South Telangana.

Stating that names of schemes were being borrowed from North Telangana, he added that Bathukamma was also being forced on South Telangana.

“We strongly object to naming the restoration of the water tanks scheme as ‘Mission Kakatiya’. Kakatiyas built water tanks only in North Telangana. Why should it be forced on South Telangana, when the tanks here were built by our own kings?” he asked.

He demanded naming of such schemes differently for both districts. Mr Reddy also questioned the rationale behind forcing people from South TS to celebrate Bathukamma.

“Bathukamma is a major festival in North TS. It was thrust upon South TS people recently,” Mr Reddy added.

Bonalu is the major festival of South Telangana. Though the TRS government declared both as state festivals, it heavily publicised Bathukamma in the media and ignored Bonalu," Mr Chinna Reddy added.

Following this, Legislative Affairs Minister Mr T. Harish Rao asked political parties not to create a wedge between North and South Telangana people with “narrow-minded thinking”.

He said the government had been taking enough care to see that each district got its due recognition with regard to its unique culture and traditions and there was no question of neglecting any district.
