No women in capital Cabinet sub-committee meetings

Opposition parties see this as the government’s “conspiracy strategy”

Vijayawada: The conspicuous absence of women in the capital Cabinet sub-committee meetings being held across various villages in the capital region in Guntur district comes as a surprise to observers.

Opposition parties and those like A. Seshagiri Rao of Borupalem, who were reluctant to give their land, see this as the government’s “conspiracy strategy”. They opine that if the women attend the gram sabhas they will in all probability express their unwillingness towards the land pooling proposal.

The detractors also say that some farmers want to give their land without verifying full details or careful study of the repercussions of the pooling policy. But women want to know every detail and then only will they get an idea about the merits and demerits of the pooling. By their natural intuition they could also judge the seriousness of the assurances of the government. Hence they were kept at bay.

Some officials, and TD leaders like P. Chandrasekhar Rao of Modugulankapalem, rubbished these allegations. They clarified that women were busy with agriculture and related work. When cross- questioned whether the work involves only women, there was no answer.

Their omission from the meetings has irked many women, both educated and illiterate.

During the Sakhamuru gram sabha when G. Sakunthala, a housewife raised this issue and demanded an end to the discrimination. Women in Lingayapalem, Borupalem and Mandadam demanded they be made a part of the land pooling process immediately.
