Two malls get hoax bomb threat

Police are furthur investigating the case with suspicion of caller to be juvenile offender
Chennai: Two shopping malls in the city received a bomb threat on Friday, which kept the bomb disposal and defusal squads (BDDS) of the city police on their toes. This time, the call was traced to a mobile phone reportedly stolen a few hours ago, the police said. Around 11.18 am, the city police control room received a call stating that bombs would explode at Ampa Skywalk mall in Aminjikarai and Spencer Plaza on Anna Salai.
The police said the caller, who spoke in Hindi and Tamil, informed them that he overheard two persons discussing the plan near Kodambakkam.Within a few minutes, BDDS personnel rushed to the two malls and initiated an evacuation plan. After a search, which lasted more than two hours at both the places, the calls were declared hoax, the police said.
More than a thousand people were evacuated from Ampa mall, a relatively busier one that also houses movie screens. “A lot of people had turned up for the movies and we had to evacuate them, including the staff at 98 shops in the five-floor structure,” a police official said.
A special team tracked the mobile phone number and landed up in the house of a woman at Komaleshwaranpettai in Pudupet. The woman told us that the number belonged to her. But her phone was stolen around 7.30 am near Korukkupet and she had lodged a complaint with the Egmore police around 9 am, a senior officer said. The police suspect the caller to be a juvenile offender from the same locality as the woman. Further investigations are on.
