Botched sterilisation surgeries kills 11 women in Chhattisgarh

83 women had undergone laparoscopic sterilisation surgery in the camp
Raipur: Botched sterilisation surgeries at a government-sponsored family planning camp at Pendari, in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur district, nearly 120 km from here, have led to the death of 11 women, all aged between 28 years and 32 years.
At least 14 of 62 other women admitted to different hospitals in the district headquarters town of Bilaspur are suffering complications following the botched surgeries and are in critical condition, a senior district officer told this newspaper on Tuesday.
“The death toll in the tragedy has mounted to 11. A total of 62 women have been admitted to four different hospitals in Bilaspur owing to post-surgery complications. Fourteen of them are critical. It is a challenging situation,” Bilaspur commissioner Sonmani Bohra said.
A team of doctors from AIIMS in New Delhi was being flown to Bilaspur to attend to the victims of the sterilisation tragedy after a request was made by the Chhattisgarh government, according to Union health ministry officials.
According to official reports, 83 women had undergone laparoscopic sterilisation surgery in the camp organised by the state government at a private hospital at Pendari on Saturday. All of them were discharged immediately.
