'Stop Kerala from building dam' says Tamil Nadu Chief Minister

Pambar a tributary of river Amaravathy which in turn is a tributary of river Cauvery
Chennai: Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on Saturday sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s immediate intervention to stop Kerala from constructing a dam across the Pambar River at Pattisery or any other scheme on the river. In his letter to the PM, a copy of which was circulated to the media, Mr Panneerselvam also requested Mr Modi to advise the Kerala government to furnish all details of the schemes proposed by the state in the Pambar sub-basin.
He also urged the PM to request Kerala not to proceed with any of the projects in any manner till the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) was constituted and the consent of the Tamil Nadu government obtained. The CM’s apprehension was that the irrigation and drinking water supply of the entire area depending on the Amaravathy River, a tributary of the River Cauvery, would be affected if Kerala was allowed to build the dam and obstruct flow to the Amaravathy reservoir from Pambar river.
Kerala’s proposed plan in taking up new projects in the Pambar Sub basin was in violation of the final order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal dated February 5, 2007, Mr Panneerselvam said, adding that any new project should have the specific consent of the downstream state of Tamil Nadu and approval of the CMB without which it would not be possible to monitor execution of projects by party states.
