Railways neglect amenities in TVM division

the budgetary allocation for passenger amenities was even lesser in 2013-14 than the previous year
Kochi: Ever wondered why projects like giving the Ernakulam railway station a makeover of world standards remain only on paper for years? An RTI inquiry has come up with a possible answer as it has revealed that when it comes to allocation of grants for improving passenger amenities, the Thiruvananthapuram division is sorely neglected by the railways.
In fact, the budgetary allocation for passenger amenities was even lesser in 2013-14 than the previous year. “The budgetary allocation for passenger amenities in the division for the last three financial years was Rs 63, 732, Rs 103, 424 and Rs 98, 185 respectively, ” disclosed divisional Public Information Officer, T Venkateshwara in reply to an RTI query filed by college student, Ajay S Kumar.
This , despite the fact that the division records the highest earning in the southern railways after Chennai. The total earning of the Thiruvananthapuram division for the first nine months of 2013 accounting year was Rs 1010 crore, including Rs 668 crore passenger revenue.
The fact that East Central Railway was allotted Rs 22.9 crore during the 2012-13 fiscal year to enhance passenger amenities for all its five divisions, makes the treatment of Thiruvananthapuram division all the more unfair.
“It’s high time the railways implemented promised projects by allocating more grants for them and provided basic facilities at stations and on trains,” stresses Mr Paul K J Manvettom, oresident, All Kerala Railway Users Association.
