Heavy rains lash Nellore district

Several tanks breached in district under the impact of Niloufer cyclone

Nellore: Fresh spell of heavy rains ravaged several towns and villages across Nellore district causing flood like situation at several places affecting normal life in the last 24 hours. The sudden rain on Saturday which continued throughout the day on Sunday caused by a possible cyclone ‘Niloufer’ predicted to hit the Kutch region of Gujarat affected life across Nellore district.

With Udayagiri town receiving an unprecedented rainfall of more than 214.2 mm in the last 12 hours alone from Saturday evening to Sunday morning, the entire town remained inundated under waist-deep water with the rain water submerging several colonies in Udayagiri town.

Several tanks were reportedly breached owing to the heavy rains that lashed Nellore in the last 24 hours.

According to information, the ‘Tirumala Cheruvu’ in Udayagiri breached at six different places causing anxious moments to the people and especially those residing in the low lying areas. And the ‘Kotha Cheruvu’ at Varikuntapadu also developed breaches at two different spots

Several mandals in the Sullurpeta, Nayudupeta, Venkatagiri, Gudur and other parts of the district witnessed very heavy rains right through the day on Sunday. A few CC roads close to the national highways and important arterial places in towns across the district turned into massive pools, waist-deep at some points, paralysing traffic. Train services, however, remained intact.

Meanwhile, officials are closely monitoring the situation across the district with the rains likely to continue the next 24 hours according to the Met department.
