Water released from Krishnagiri dam

Storage level was maintained at 51 feet in KRP, against the full height of 52 feet
Krishnagiri: With rains lashing Krishnagiri for the last few days, surplus water from the brimming Krishnagiri reservoir project (KRP) was released on Saturday. Storage level was maintained at 51 feet in KRP, against the full height of 52 feet, and inflow was about 300 cusecs on Saturday. According to Krishnagiri PWD officials, outflow from KRP was stopped for a few hours after Vellampatti villagers reported a breach in the canal transporting water from Balekuli lake to 26 other lakes in Poochampalli taluk. Outflow was resumed after the breaches were repaired.
Villagers in Poochampalli taluk tasted the benefit of the project as the canal, dug for about 13 km, started receiving water three years after the launch of the Rs 6 crore project. Apart from being useful for irrigation, lakes that receive water from the project will help in increasing the groundwater level in the region surrounding the lakes. In neighbouring Dharmapuri district, Marandahalli and neighbouring areas recorded 35.50 mm of rainfall while Hogenakkal received 26.40 mm of rainfall on Saturday.
Rainwater entered houses in villages close to Panchapalli in Dharmapuri. The locals said rainwater that could not drain away properly because of encroachments on the canal transporting water to Ethakundur lake. Dharmapuri collector K. Vivekanandan visited the flooded areas and the affected people were shifted to a government school.
