A fully air conditioned hi-tech truck to sterilise stray dogs
Coimbatore: A fully air conditioned hi-tech truck to sterilise stray dogs has come to the city to curb the growing menace of growling mongrels.
The imported mobile veterinary truck with advanced facilities like X ray, microscope, ultrasound facilities and sophisticated operation theatre can sterilize up to 50 dogs a day. “We have targetted to sterilize 500 dogs in the next 10 days,” said Nigel Otter, managing trustee of India Project for Animals and Nature (IPAN).
A team comprising one veterinarian, five dog catchers and three assistant veterinarians will travel in the vehicle to sterilize dogs.
As part of the programme, local veterinarians will be given hands-on experience on performing surgeries in a better way. “Dog catchers will also be trained on following safe methods like using a butterfly net instead of ropes and hooks to trap a dog,” he said.
People can vaccinate their dogs for free at the mobile van, which has so far covered around eight states in India. The vehicle arrived from Goa and its next destination is Ranchi. “Our main objective is to eradicate rabies from the country. In the last one year, one lakh dogs have been vaccinated for rabies in different states,”. he said.
With an explosion of dog’s population, people feel threatened over the presence of growling dogs in residential areas. A group of dogs could be seen roaming around on the walker’s track of Race Course.
“As of now, Coimbatore city has around 30,000 dogs. Dogs are sterilized at Seeranaickenpalayam and in the newly opened Ukkadam centre. Around 500 dogs are sterilized in a month,” said Kalpana Vasudevan, an Animal Welfare Board member and managing trustee of Peoples for Animals Coimbatore Unit II.
