FM Radio by students creates air waves

Students take big plunge towards edutainment
ALAPPUZHA: A Frequency Modulated (FM) radio set up by students of St Joseph Convent English Medium School Parayamkulam near Nooranad, here, is playing a significant role in nurturing the talent of school kids.
The first transmission of FM, ‘Dhaara’, from the school commenced in September and it has become a hit with the students. The programmes, right from education to entertainment are being produced by small groups of students.
The performance of the Radio Jockeys, Muhammad Saalih and Lakshmi Das has been well appreciated. The FM is popular among the students as it caters to the needs of the present curriculum. It helps develop their creativity and communicative skills. It tells them about current affairs.
It was Sis Soumya, principal of the school who took the initiative in bringing the FM radio to school. “The idea crossed my mind when I watched the movie ‘Philips and the Monkey Pen’. I discussed the matter in a meeting of parents and teachers. We set up a core panel of teachers and parents who would provide moral and technical support in setting up the FM station. The station, set up in a single room of school, will be used as a tool to educate the students and develop in them an interest in academic activities though entertainment”, she says.
The FM radio station, which can be heard within a radius of 100 to 500 metres of the school, will open for half an hour every day during lunch break. Each division is assigned the task of preparing programmes for each day. The theme and ideas need to be discussed with the teachers. Apart from this, every day, a question is asked through the radio. It should be answered on a sheet of paper and put in a box near the FM station. The winners will be declared through a lucky draw every day.
RJ Lekshmi Das of class twelve says the radio gave her the confidence to pursue her academics activities. “The anchoring, contents of the programmes and the assignments are extremely useful and give us deep insights into life”, she says.
The students are now planning to invite celebrities to join them in live chat programmes.
“I was a complete novice. I became part of the programme for the simple reason that I love listening to the radio. Now I find myself presenting programmes. I really enjoy it”, says Muhammad Saalih, of class XII.
