iPhone 6 catches fire, gives man second degree burns

iPhone 6 caught fire after bending in Phillip Lechter's pocket

Since the launch of Apple iPhone 6, different issues like bendgate and hairgate are making top headlines. However, according to a new report on CNET, stated that an iPhone 6 owned by Phillip Lechter caught fire after bending in the pocket is in the air.

The US entrepreneur was on his way to the University of Arizona in Tuscon in a rickshaw, along with his family. The rickshaw suddenly hit a trolley track, which resulted in the shift of the iPhone 6 handset to the right side of his front pocket.

CNET further reported that the iPhone 6 was positioned such that it was bent nearly 90 degrees and punctured the battery, even though he had a leather case on his iPhone. Phillip Lechter described this incident on his blog saying, ‘The smoke was thick and I quickly laid down to get the Apple iPhone 6 out of my pocket. The smell was disturbing. I could feel my leg burning. I pulled the Apple iPhone 6 out of my pocket and threw it to the side.’

Suddenly, Lechter felt a burning sensation in his leg. Noticing the fire, a passer-by threw a cup of water on his leg to put the fire out.

‘The Doctor’s report described a 11.5 cm x 10.5 cm burn area on my right leg and classified the burn as 2nd degree with first degree burns surrounding the area’, as mentioned in his blog.

Phillip Lechter also posted the photo of his burnt leg on his blog:

Lithium batteries are dangerous enough and tend to explode when a physical force is applied. The iPhone 6’s internal battery went through a physical damage when the chassis bent by more than a certain degree, causing the battery to short out and spark.

Lithium, being a highly flammable substance, ignites on high temperature and has a tendency to explode in most conditions, inside the battery. This has led the iPhone to explode and catch fire.
