Speed curbs enforced on ghat roads

Local cabs, taxis and jeeps are constantly monitored for violations
Tirupati: The TTD has been enforcing speed curbs along the ghat roads leading and exiting Tirumala for the safety of the devotees. The idea conceptualised by Tirumala JEO K.S. Srinivasa Raju in 2013 aimed at minimizing the accidents along both the ghat roads by enforcing time-based curbs. The new time-based speed curbs came into vogue on the ghat roads and TTD had set the minimum time for journey from Tirupati toll gate to Tirumala toll gate along the up ghat road at 28 minutes while the minimum time fixed for the return journey from the Tirumala toll gate to the Tirupati toll gate along the down ghat road at 40 minutes minimum.
All the vehicles including government, private, RTC buses, two wheelers and four wheelers, while plying along both the ghat roads must comply with the minimum time based rules and should not reach the toll gates before the stipulated time mentioned on the bar-coded toll receipt. Any violations have been dealt with in a tough manner by the TTD officials from time to time.
While the TTD lets off the devotees in case they violate the rule and arrive at the toll gates ahead of the stipulated time after a stern warning, the local cabs, taxis and jeeps are constantly monitored for violations and placed under not allowed by the TTD vigilance wing sleuths from time to time.
According to TTD assistant vigilance and security officer of Alipiri B. Kurma Rao, the local taxiwallahs are the ones who give the rules a toss to cover more trips and earn the most, compromising on the safety of the devotees. As such the TTD cracks the whip regularly against the offenders and at present as many as 480 taxis and jeeps have been placed under not allowed to ply between the ghat roads. While approximately 1,500 taxis operate along the ghat roads on any given day, almost 35 per cent of them flout the rules and earn the wrath of the officials.
