The gold rush

Gold rush going on at the stores in town for Dhanteras

Hyderabad: There’s a gold rush going on at the stores in town for Dhanteras. Step into any shop and there are customers looking for that perfect piece of jewellery to buy for the festival. And the jewellers too are going that extra mile to make this Dhanteras a happy one for all.

From presenting new collections especially for Diwali to making arrangements for the huge number of customers who will be making their way to the stores, city jewellers are looking forward to a busy time this Diwali.

“Gold prices have fallen in the past few months and customers are looking at this as the perfect time to invest. We have even had pre bookings wherein people have bought the gold ornaments but will be picking them up on Dhanteras as its auspicious,” says Murli Krishna, the director of Manepally Jewels.

Many in the city are also consulting pundits to ascertain the right time to buy gold. “It has been a tradition in our family since many years. It’s not about investing but about welcoming Goddess Lakshmi and that’s why each family member buys gold in whatever form they wish to. We will be going in the afternoon on Dhanteras as that is the auspicious time,” says Manisha Kapoor, a socialite.

There are many others who believe that one should just buy gold for luck. “We follow all the rituals for the festival and buying gold and silver is also a part of it. We do it every year," says another socialite, Beena Mehta.

“Considering that this is the time you welcome Goddess Lakshmi to your home, people do invest in gold. And even if they don’t want to spend a large amount, they at least buy one gram of gold. We are expecting around 300-400 customers to the store,” says Sajesh, manager of Jos Alukkas.

Facilitating the gold rush are also stores that are bringing out new collections for Diwali. Murli Krishna says, “We sat down three months prior to Dhanteras and put together 12 new collections that range from Kundan to lightweight gold jewellery. In these few days of Diwali, we sometimes see more than thousand customers per day.”
