Disproportionate assets case: Early Diwali for AIADMK

Workers erupt in joy as SC grants bail to Jaya
Chennai: The day started in a sombre mood at the AIADMK headquarters with party leaders offering floral tributes to M.G. Ramchandran on the party’s 43rd anniversary. But by noon, slogans in praise of ‘Amma’ reverberated, enthusiastic party workers burst crackers, distributed sweets and danced to the tunes of MGR songs as TV channels flash news of conditional bail to their party supremo J. Jayalalithaa.
Taking a lesson from the day when rumours of HC granting bail to Ms Jayalalithaa had confused party workers and supporters, they waited with patience on Friday and only after cross-checking the information related to the bail did the cadres, who thronged party headquarters at Royapettah, erupt into celebration.
Most of them, clad in black, mourning the conviction of their leader, couldn’t control their emotions: while some started hailing ‘Amma’ as the undisputed leader of Tamils, others wept in joy.
The grey mood that prevailed at Poes Garden, where Ms Jayalalithaa resides, also turned festive after the news spread. State ministers and party seniors thronged the area andcelebrated with the cadre.
Jaya smiles in prison:
Former Tamil Nadu CM J. Jayalalithaa smiled at last, after three weeks of staying mum. “When she was told that the SC had granted her conditional bail, Ms Jayalalithaa smiled and thanked the prison staff for taking care of her,” a source said.
