Vizag city will be relieved from power woes if traditional electricity be converted into underground cable
Visakhapatnam: Vizag city will be relieved from power woes if the plans for converting traditional electricity network to underground cable system materialise.The state government had submitted proposal to the World Bank to provide underground power cable system to the Port City. Secretary of Energy department Ajay Jain said that they had forwarded the initial proposal to the WB on October 6 with Rs500 crore and would prepare a detailed keeping the disaster view.
As coastal AP is prone to frequent cyclones and natural calamities, both the state and Central governments have realised the need for underground power cables to minimise the damages. The recent havoc also stressed the need of such cable system.
The National Disaster Management Authority earlier proposed to replace overhead cables of about 1,000 km along the coast in AP with underground cables to reduce the damages.
The EPDCL suffered sev-ere damages during the r-ecent three cyclones, Phai-lin, Helen and Hudhud.
Now, the government is planning to arrange unde-rground cable network in Vizag city where traditional electricity network, of which roughly 80 per cent has been damaged.
Mr Jain said power transmission lines in North Andhra districts received damages to the tune of Rs1,000 crore. He also said the Prime Minister promised that the city would be provided necessary assistance as part of measures making it a Smart City.
