Know what your nails tell you about your health

Here are the five health warnings your fingernails may be sending

While going on a manicure-pedicure trip we often forget that just getting a monthly care for our nails is not enough. Nails also pay a huge role in communicating your general health.

Look at your nails closely they may reveal signs that are vital for detecting any health related problems.

Here are the five health warnings your fingernails may be sending:

Clubbed Nails

If your nails are puffed around your skin or your skin swells around your nails then you have a clubbed nail. Clubbed nail can be a reason for lung disease, especially if you already have trouble breathing, inflammatory bowel disease or liver disease.

Brittle nails

Brittle nails chip easily but the main reason for your nails been like that is hormonal or bacterial problems. Also Thyroid disease leads to brittle, dry fingernails that crack and split easily. Fungus can make nails dry or even crumbly.

Pitted nails

If you have pitted nails that mean you might have small holes in your nail. This is a sign of Psoriasis, Connective tissue disorder, Alopecia areata, and an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss or Zinc deficiency (when the pit seems to form a line across the middle of your nail).

Discoloured nails

Since childhood we have heard our mothers saying our nails should be pink. If the nails are not pink it means there is something wrong with our health. Green nails are a sign of bacterial infection, red streaks in your nail bed are a warning of a heart valve infection, blueish nails signal low oxygen levels in your blood. Dull nails mean a vitamin deficiency and white nails may signal liver disease, such as hepatitis.

Split nails

You cannot blame nail paints or the door or window to cause the splitting of nails. Split nails signify malnutrition, folic acid, Vitamin C and protein deficiencies.
