Fund crunch hits works in Ongole Municipal Corporation

CM had promised to develop Ongole as Smart City

Ongole: The municipal corporation is unable to take up several development wor-ks including widening of important roads and construction of reservoirs to improve drinking water supply in Ongole city and development works to beautify the city due to paucity of the funds.

In order to improve drinking water supply there is need to construct a third summer storage tank at Pernamitta which requires Rs 423 crore.

According to primary estimates, Rs 100 crore is required for the development of the drains in the city. There is need to construct five thousand permanent houses for poor at a cost of Rs 400 crore. Then city does not have a municipal corporation stadium and there is need to develop one which requires Rs 15 crore.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had assured that the government would take steps to beautify Ongole city and set up a ‘Silparamam’ for recreation. The officials are planning to develop ‘Ranga-raiyudu canal’. There is an urgent need to construct toilets in slums. Pothuraju canal is also to be develpoed for the smooth flow of the sewage.

The municipal corporation is getting Rs 16crore through property tax per year and is not in a position to take up the development works.

Meanwhile, Mr. Naidu assured that he would develop the Ongole city as a ‘Smart City’.

Ongole MLA Damac-herla Janardhan proposed several development works for the development of city, and sought financial assistance from the state government to take up development works at the earliest.

He urged Mr. Chandrababu Naidu to release Rs 1500 crore financial assistance for development of Ongole city and submitted a memorandum to this effect.
