Protest to save Ashtamudi Lake

Sangham alleged that the authorities were neglecting Ashtamudi Lake though the President's trophy boat race
KOLLAM: In an attempt to save the polluted Ashtamudi Lake, Purogamana Kala Sahitya Sangham (PUKASA) will organize a people's protest and pilot meeting at NGO Union Hall on October 13 to discuss ways to save the infested Lake.
The Sangham alleged that the authorities were neglecting Ashtamudi Lake though the President's trophy boat race had seen ambitious declaration of projects to save the Lake. "Sewage from hospitals and urban settlements including toilets flow into the lake and pollute the ecosystem. Sand mining and lake encroachment ensured the destruction of mangroves and other organisms in the lake," said secretary of PUKASA D. Sureshkumar.
The meeting will be inaugurated by poet Kureepuzha Sreekumar and George D'cruze a researcher on Ashtamudi Lake, will give a speech on the issues and solutions of Ashtamudi Lake. A convention planned at I.T. Hall of District Panchayat Office will be attended by trade union representatives, students union leaders, and NGOs.
