The family of a man who committed suicide staged a protest in front of the city police commissioner’s office
Coimbatore: The family of a man who committed suicide staged a protest in front of the city police commissioner’s office and Coimbatore medical college hospital (CMCH) on Saturday afternoon, alleging that his preventive arrest had led him to take the step.
V. Santhosh Kumar, 30, a resident of Kakkan Nagar, Singanallur, had been involved in petty cases and group clashes in the city over the last few years.
On Wednesday night, the police had taken preventive arrest measures to control the law and order situation in the city.
Santhosh Kumar was taken into preventive custody by the police in order to ensure that he did not threaten the law and order situation. On Friday, his mother, V Sivagami, came to the Singanallur station, where Santhosh Kumar had been detained and staged a protest in front of the police station – she also doused herself with kerosene.
The police, who feared that the woman might carry out her threat of self-immolation, after ensuring that she did not set herself on fire, released Santhosh Kumar immediately.
On Friday night, Santhosh Kumar hung himself at his house in Singanallur. His body was taken to the CMCH for post-mortem. But his family refused to accept his body from the hospital authorities until the police offered them an explanation as to why Santhosh Kumar was taken into custody.
They have also sought action against the police officers who arrested Santhosh. They then submitted a petition at the police commissioner’s office. They dispersed only after the city police assured them of action in the case.
