Patna stampede: Key lapses come to fore ahead of probe report

Due to bad lighting, the CCTV footage proved ‘inconclusive’

Patna: The Bihar government has ordered a high level enquiry into the stampede which killed 33 people and injured 29 others at Patna's Gandhi Maidan on Friday. Ahead of the report, eyewitnesses of the event pointed out many lapses which could have resulted in the tragedy.

Many questions were raised regarding bad lighting, exit points from the venue and standard operating procedures for crowd management that were not followed.

According to reports, the 3 out of 4 entry/exit gates of the venue were not completely open. The gates had been chained which led to chaos at exit point.

The lights at Gandhi Maidan, too, had not been repaired before the event. There were no emergency services at the spot. Adequate force was not stationed at the exit points for managing the crowd.

The police on Sunday said that CCTV cameras which were installed at the gate of the Gandhi Maidan had footages which proved “inconclusive” as there wasn’t enough light.

Meanwhile, Union home minister Rajnath Singh telephoned Bihar chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi again Saturday morning and promised all help. “The Bihar Chief Minister apprised me of the latest developments,” Mr Singh tweeted.
