Laptop lifting duo caught at airport

Two from Madurai pretend to be visitors

Chennai: Two well-dressed men at the visitors’ lobby in Chennai airport, who had been allegedly stealing laptop bags and gadgets of passengers who arrived from abroad in the last few months, were nabbed by the airport police on Thursday.

The two suspects, natives of Madurai, were allegedly caught red-handed around 4 am when they were trying to lift a bag from the luggage trolley of a passenger who had arrived from a Gulf country. “The passenger was busy looking for his relatives when the duo tried to lift the bag,” the police said.

The action by the police was not an accidental one. While regularly browsing through the video footage of the visitors’ lobby, they had noticed the presence of the two in the area at regular intervals. On Thursday morning, at a time when most flights from the Gulf arrive, the police team again noticed the presence of the two and caught them while they were trying to lift a bag.

The two usually take the mandatory visitor’s pass and wait for their victim to arrive. Any passenger who is in a hurry to meet their waiting relatives or catch their taxi could be the victims of the two, the police said. The two were taken to their hometown by the police on Friday for a detailed background check. The police said so far, they were under the impression that only loading and unloading staff of the airport were behind most of the thefts.
