Mayor hit by water stagnation

Mayor P Rajkumar’s vehicle was forced to wade through sheets of water
Coimbatore: Just a few hours of showers in the city and the Coimbatore mayor P Rajkumar’s vehicle was forced to wade through sheets of water under the flyover near Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday.
As the Mayor was on his way to the corporation office in Town Hall, his official vehicle sped through puddles of water under the flyover. So, he stopped and inspected the water stagnation.
Deputy Mayor Leelavathi Unni’s car too splashed through the puddles under the flyover, which is a frustratingly regular feature every time the city receives showers for a few hours. The potholed roads under the flyover at Kikani junction near Ram Nagar is inundated with motorists struggling to ride through. Underpasses in the city are flooded even with minimal showers.
Yet, the corporation has made no efforts to come up with measures to curb inundations. It has been unable to formulate a permanent solution. The rains continue to bring along a host of problems including traffic snarls, overflowing of sewers, and unhygienic civic conditions.
“Year after year the public have had to deal with water-borne diseases due to poor hygienic conditios. Not to mention the vector-borne diseases like dengue and malari,” laments activist A Manoj.
Vanitha Mohan, chairperson, Siruthuli, rued while the city reels under water crisis, on the other hand, water is being wasted. Harvesting 70 per cent of the 600 mm average rainfall that the city receives yearly will ensure that the city receives enough water for one whole year as the city consumes 300 million litres of water every day.
Water now is getting wasted as the city has failed to take measures to set up rain water harvesting structures, she said
