Residents ‘no’ to cellphone tower

Constant exposure to radiation would increase cancer risk and affect the immune system
Coimbatore: A group of locals from a residential colony in Mettupalayam urged the collector on Monday to stop the installation of a mobile phone tower in their area.
Residents of Jaganathan Layout and Chikkadasampalayam trooped into the collectorate expressing the fear that constant exposure to radiation would increase cancer risk and affect the immune system.
“We have also heard that increasing number of cellphone towers have led to high mortality rate of sparrows as radiation from these towers is causing harm to the birds. Apart from the radiation problem, the public also have to contend with noise pollution from the tower generator,” said Mr R. Selvaraj, a resident.
The residents had petitioned the collector last year following which the cellphone company was asked to consult the residents and stop the proposed move if they did not give the go-ahead.
“However, the firm started erecting the tower without holding a discussion with us. We immediately opposed the move and prevented the erection of the tower then. But now, there are indications that the installation works are likely to begin again,” he said.
Hence, the residents demanded the intervention of collector Archana Patnaik to stop the installation of the mobile tower. The collector promised to look into the issue.
