RIMS sanitation wing workers’ stir poses threat to patients

RIMS is the only government hospital in the district where treatment is available for a host of diseases
Srikakulam: Appalling sanitary conditions at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences hospital premises in Srikakulam, is posing serious health hazards to in and out patients. The negligent attitude of senior officials of RIMS in not being able to resolve salary issues to contract workers of the sanitation wing is said to have led to the situation.
RIMS is the only government hospital in the district where treatment is available for a host of diseases and emergency cases.
Due to the apathy in payment of salaries, contract sanitation wor-kers have been on strike for the past week under the aegis of the Citu.
As a result, unhygienic conditions are prevailing in the hospital at gynaecology, medical and isolation wards. Patients are worried over their health.
“Workers have not been paid salaries for the last five months and we are demanding regular payment,” said Citu state vice-president, P. Paparao and contract workers union secretary, D. Simhachalam.
On Tuesday, sanitation workers organised Vanta Vaarpu in RIMS premises.
When contacted RIMS director, T. Jayaraj said '6 lakh had been paid to the contractor on Septe-mber 18 for payment of salaries to workers. The workers took an adva-nce from the contractor earlier and to collect the amount he stopped salaries, the director added but workers denied it.
