Half-an-hour to one-hour power cuts were imposed in some parts of city

Hyderabad: The Telangana state is again facing power deficit after two units of the Kothagudem power plant tripped on Friday evening and Saturday morning. Also, a hydel unit has been shut down due to heavy water leakage. This has resulted in an overall loss of 10 MU.
The impact was felt in the twin cities, as unscheduled cuts were imposed on Friday and Saturday. Half-an-hour to one-hour power cuts were imposed in some parts of city. The situation has worsened despite officials being confident of not facing any issues due to the hydel inflows in September.
In fact, the entire loss of power is due to technical glitches in the power plants, that have affected power generation. While most power plants in the state are well past their active lifespan, a fact that has been repeatedly pointed out, the shortage of skilled workers to repair the glitches too has an impact.
Three units of the Kothagudem thermal power plant were unavailable till Saturday evening, due to flame failure (outage) and other maintenance work. Also, Nagarjunasagar Left Canal 2 is facing an outage. One thermal unit that was experiencing an outage was revived by Saturday evening after failing to revive it twice on Friday.
The Kothagudem units have had four failures this month as per insiders. Despite having two units shut down for overhaul, the process is much behind schedule.
“Six units need immediate overhaul, but that depends on many other factors. In fact, the condition of the units have deteriorated a lot in the past two years,” said an
insider.
