Doordarshan news anchor calls Chinese President ‘11 Jinping’ loses Job

Anchor mistook Chinese President’s first name “Xi” for the Roman numerical “XI”

New Delhi: National broadcaster Doordarshan has suspended an anchor and dropped her from the panel of news readers after she mispronounced Chinese President Xi Jinping’s name thrice and ended up calling him “Eleven Jinping” (an apparent confusion with Roman numerals).

Sources in the state run broadcaster claimed that the anchor is not a permanent employee and had made the mistake while reading a late night bulletin before the Chinese President’s arrival in India.

Apparently the anchor mistook the Chinese President’s first name “Xi” for the Roman numerical “XI” seemingly because the news feed in the teleprompter always appears in capital letters.

Director-general of DD News Archana Dutta said, “The anchor was a casual employee. We have discontinued her services and dropped her from the panel of news anchors.”

The national broadcaster has often faced criticism for its poor production quality. Sour-ces stated that the slip-up demonstrated that news readers were not briefed properly or did not do enough homework about major events.
