Kerala liquor ban: This thattukada is their stir against prohibition

Attack by Youth Congress workers has doubled their business

Kottayam: This ‘thattukada,’ which functions near the KSRTC bus stand in Ettumanur, is the product of the new liquor policy of the state government.
Run by four former employees of a bar hotel in Ettumanur, it has been named ‘Annam Mudangiyavarudey Thattukada’ (the shop of those who lost their bread). The four youngsters are Tito Thomas, K.S. Sangeeth, Saji Dominic and Ravikumar.
They decided to start the ‘thattukada’ in front of their former bar hotel on September 4 after remaining unemployed for almost five months.
First, they named it as the ‘The thattukada sanctioned by Sudheeran,’ alluding to the efforts of Mr Sudheeran to realise the liquor policy of the government. Later it was given the present name after a group of Youth Congress activists barged into the shop in protest.
“We were clueless on how to make a living after the bar was closed. All of us have commitments, including family and children. When the bar was closed all of a sudden, we were in a dilemma and, therefore, we launched the shop,” Tito Thomas, former manager of the bar, told DC.
They were disappointed by the way their shop was attacked by the Youth Congress members. “But the attack helped us a lot because we got enough publicity for our shop. Now our sales have doubled,” says Sangeeth.
The hotel has a sale of Rs 25,000 a day. They will continue running the shop till they get new employment, they say.
