Gandhinagar/New Delhi: Welfare schemes by successive governments have not served their purpose of uplifting the poor, instead they only made them more dependent than ever, said PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday, stressing the need to frame policies that would make the needy self-sufficient.
Mr Modi said that existing schemes and programmes had lowered the confidence of the poor and made them more dependent on the government.
“A person breaks down when he be-comes dependent on others. In such a situation, he would think of dying instead of living such a life. There is no better thing than bringing such persons out from that situation,” Mr Modi said at an event at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar.
