Police detain Tibetans protesting against Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit

New Delhi: Delhi Police on Wednesday detained Tibetan Youth Congress protesters who were agitating against Chinese President Xi Jinping's three-day visit to India.

Tenzin Jigme, the president of the Tibetan Youth Congress said, "Today, we are protesting the visit of President of China to India. We are Tibetan Youth Congress members here."

"The situation inside Tibet is very critical. Since 2009, over 130 people in Tibet have set themselves on fire. We want such issues to be resolved. The Chinese president must listen to these issues and find a solution for them," he added.

President Jinping will be received by Gujarat Governor O.P. Kohli, Chief Minister Anandiben Patel and her cabinet colleagues at Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhai Patel International Airport at around 2 pm.

President Jinping, his wife and his entourage will be given a traditional welcome along with a guard of honour.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will welcome him in Vastrapur, after which, both leaders will hold talks.

It is expected that both sides will sign three memoranda of understanding (MoUs). Of them, two are for relations between Guangdong and Gujarat and Guangzhou and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. The third MoU is related to cooperation in the industrial sector.

Thereafter, President Jinping will visit Sabarmati Ashram, walk along the Sabarmati River front and will see folk art forms and dances.

Prime Minister Modi will then host a private dinner for the Chinese President, after which the latter will leave for New Delhi.
