How they wing it to win it...

Actors speak about how they pull off their scenes in front of camera

They may work against the tightest of deadlines, but telly actors still take pains to improve on all their scenes. And improvising plays a huge part in how a scene finally shapes up. We got a few popular actors to tell us how they pull it off in front of the camera

Manish Raisinghan

All the Roli-Siddhant scenes in Sasural Simar Ka are more than 50 per cent improvised. Our creative and production teams love the improvisation in our scenes so much that now for song sequences they don’t even call for choreographers. Avika (Gor) and I do the entire choreography and lipsync. This is special for me because as someone who had two left feet, I’m not just dancing but also choreographing routines on a popular show.

I remember I had to do a scene in Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke where I had to make my dad understand my needs, as he is shown to be very stubborn and the one who makes decisions. I made a few changes to that scene: Instead of acting stubborn myself, I cried. Everyone appreciated the scene and the changes I had made. That’s been the most memorable scene I’ve improvised.

My favourite improvisation was the one with Mona Wasu in Yudh where I’m talking to her and when the scene was about to get over, I grabbed her and kissed her on her cheeks. We were both so engrossed in the scene and that gesture was important for a second, everyone was shocked, including Mona. She took it in a very sporting way and my director was so happy that he high-fived me.
Another memorable scene was in Uttaran, where instead of saying the dialogue, I started singing the lines. Everyone clapped for me. It is easier when your directors and writers trust you as an actor, I am lucky to be an actor who is trusted blindly by her team.

There was a scene in Uttaran with Tina Dutta, in which my character is shown having a change of heart, and he goes from being negative to positive. I visualised certain situations from my past and the tears just began to flow. The scene turned out very well and I got a lot of appreciation. Even after the shot was filmed, I couldn’t stop crying.
