2K display is useless, full HD is enough

Compromising battery life with a 2K display is a waste of power

The war for the best display screen is gaining new heights. With manufacturers such as LG with their G3 smartphone, the race to the top in the high-resolution seems prominent soon.

However, Sony looks at this race as a useless competition. We agree to some extent. While the human eye can view better, full HD on a regular 5-inch or 5.5-inch display is more than sufficient. And in any case, will you actually be watching 2K and 4K content on smartphone?

Forums and chat room's reply to the same query on the topic that it would be better to have 2K and 4K display screens on tablets and laptops. Most agree that while full HD is more than enough, some even prefer 720p HD screens since they don’t watch as many high-definition flicks on a small screen. They prefer watching full HD movies on larger screens since it makes more sense. Keep apart having full HD and 2K displays on a smartphone, is there enough content to watch on these screens anyways?

On the other part, having more than full HD display on a smartphone puts a huge strain on the battery life. The higher the display, the more the battery is consumed by the display chip to operate the number of pixels on the screen. Conventional smartphones today, that feature HD and full HD displays, don’t last more than eight hours on an average. With higher-resolution screens, you can imagine compromising another 30% – 40% of the battery life. Is it worth the bargain? Though a 2K display would look sharper, and clearer, you are opting for (almost useless) display quality over battery life.

Sony claims that they can deliver better display quality at full HD. Sony would rather trade off 2K displays than compromise on battery consumption. Sony’s latest flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z3, also features a full HD display. They also claim that some smartphone fans would be disappointed with the Z3 having only a full HD display, but they have a very good reason behind it.
