BJP candidate joins AIADMK with family

G.P.R. Vellaiammal along with husband joined the AIADMK
Chennai: With the local body elections nearing, several candidates from prominent political parties barring AIADMK have been withdrawing their nominations and joining the ruling party.G.P.R. Vellaiammal, the BJP nominee for the Tirunelveli corporation mayor post, whose withdrawal from the race allowed her AIADMK rival to get elected unopposed, joined the AIADMK on Friday in presence of the party supremo.
She is among the scores of other party workers who joined AIADMK. Vellaiyammal’s husband Ganesa Perumalraja, state secretary of the BJP's traders wing, also quit the saffron party and joined AIADMK.
The BJP, which had aimed at testing its fortunes in the September 18 bypolls to various local bodies in the backdrop of boycott by DMK and support by NDA partners, had suffered a jolt last week when Vellaiyammal withdrew from the elections.
Her rival, AIADMK’s E. Bhuvaneswari was elected unopposed as these two candidates alone were in fray following scrutiny of nomination papers. The state BJP unit had even cried foul over the incident, alleging that Vellaiyammal had been ‘threatened’ to withdraw.
Several other party cadres and office-bearers from DMDK, PMK, MDMK and Congress, also joined the AIADMK, according to a release from the ruling party headquarters.
