Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao awards Rs 1 crore to Sania Mirza

Hyderabad: Tennis ace Sania Mirza has received another Rs 1 crore from the Telangana state government. The government also presented 2002 Asian Games gold medallist in power weight lifting Suryavamsi Hemalatha of Bellampalli in Adilabad district with a Rs 25 lakh cheque, besides promising a plot, a house and a government job as coach.
Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, sprung a pleasant surprise on tennis star Sania Mirza and Ms Hemalatha, when they called on him at the Secretariat on Thursday.
The CM, who presented Rs 1 crore to Sania Mirza before she left for the US Open tournament, towards tour expenses, gifted another Rs 1 crore in cheque to her to participate in the Japan and China open tennis tournaments.
Overwhelmed by the gesture, Sania assured the CM that she would strive hard to win forthcoming tournaments and enhance the brand image of Telangana and Hyderabad in the world. She thanked the CM for his gesture.
Ms Hemalatha told Mr Rao though she won a gold medal in the Asian Games yet she was not selected for other international tournaments by successive governments. “I have dedicated my life to sports and in providing training to youngsters, but I live in abject poverty,” she told the CM with tears in her eyes. Moved by her plight, the CM showered her with gifts in cash and kind.
“Like all other sectors, sports too were neglected in Telangana in the samaikhya Andhra Pradesh. We have to do justice to remove the past injustice,” Mr Rao said.
