Floods to delay Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls

State and Centre keen to ensure relief work is not hampered
New Delhi/Srinagar: The Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, that are due to be held by January 2015, are likely to be put off, with the security agencies telling the Election Commission that given the unprecedented floods in the state, it would be extremely difficult to hold elections as per the schedule.
Government sources said once the poll panel does decide to delay the election, a decision will have to be taken by the Union Cabinet. “This is a unique situation since Jammu and Kashmir enjoys a special status different from other states. So the Election Commission and the Centre will have to discuss the issue in detail as both the state and Centre are keen to ensure relief and rehabilitation work is not hampered.” a senior government official said.
