Shanghai to San Francisco in 2 hours, courtesy Chinese supersonic submarine

Concept first used by the Soviet Union to create torpedoes

Mumbai: Shanghai to San Francisco takes almost 12 hours by flight. Imagine covering that distance in just two hours.

What could make it possible is a new Chinese supersonic submarine, unlike the conventional looking sub, as reported by Mashable.

The sub resembles a torpedo and has an unusual shape, helping to move quickly through water. The sub also has a potential of reaching speeds of up to 3,600 miles per hour.

The sub is based on a new technology called ‘supercavitation’, which means that an object in water moves in an air bubble.

The air bubble helps the submerged object to move at such high speeds. However, the developers faced up a major steering issue during testing and are trying to resolve it.

Constantly showering a liquid membrane on the sub’s surface is a possible remedy, according to the South China Morning Post.

Scientists hope that the science could be used in military, water sports and civilian travel.
