Dried-up lakes in Cubbon Park to get a new life

Visitors going to Cubbon Park can soon revel in a breathtaking view of the lakes

Bengaluru: Visitors going to Cubbon Park can soon revel in a breathtaking view of the lakes during their stroll at the park. The Horticulture department has joined hands with various agencies like B.PAC, Bangalore Cares and other organisations to revive the dried-up lakes inside the park. Plans are afoot to rejuvenate the three existing lakes in Cubbon Park premises before the next monsoon.

According to sources, an inspection was conducted by a team of experts on May 20 to ascertain the feasibility of reviving the lakes. Based on their positive feedback, the agencies have now proceeded to refurbish the lakes. A member of Bangalore Cares, who preferred to be unnamed, told Deccan Chronicle that necessary approvals were taken to begin the works and the plan was to develop the lakes within the next two months.

“We are still in the process of planning. Certain decisions like who will bear the cost of the project and what will be the periphery of the lakes, are yet to be finalized. We hope to make these decisions within the next one week and start the rejuvenation. We aim to complete the works before the arrival of the North East monsoon,” the member said.

Speaking about the need to reclaim the city’s lakes, the member said, “There is a need to feed the water table in the city and the lakes in Cubbon Park too play an important role. The water level has deteriorated and many birds which earlier depended on the water here have stopped visiting the lake. Hopefully, more birds will migrate after the revival of lakes.”

Apart from refurbishing the lakes, there are plans to develop more toilets and install dustbins at Cubbon Park. The Cubbon Park Walkers’ Association president S.Umesh said though the park is spread over a sprawling 192 acres, there are only 2 toilets. “Many senior citizens have complained about the lack of toilet facilities. With this, their needs will be met. Reviving the lakes will enhance the faded glory of Cubbon Park and will ensure that visitors have a good time,” he said.
