Vijayawada/Vizag: Joy erupted among residents of Vijayawada soon after Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, announced that the state capital would be around Vijayawada. It was a dream come true for lakhs of people and farmers in and around Vijayawada.

The people have been anticipating swift transformation of the city into a world class one as promised by Mr Naidu during electioneering.“With the capital status, now Vijayawada will get an identity and there will be faster development.

There is a big difference between ‘Vijayawada’ and ‘Vijayawada as capital of Andhra Pradesh.’ This difference will be seen soon with development picking up,” said S. Lakshmi a final-year B.Sc student.

Meanwhile, protests erupted across Vizag and surrounding districts over the decision on the new capital. Soon after the announcement, students of Andhra University, under the banner of Uttarandhra Development Forum, staged a protest in front of the main gate of the campus and burnt the effigy of Mr Naidu.

Members of the UDF said that the government has ignored the recommendations of the Sivaramakrishnan Committee.

Rayalaseema protests capital decision:

Protests rocked all parts of the Rayalaseema region after Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced the new capital at Vijayawada. Agitators took to streets, opposing the decision. Educational institutions and shops remained shut at Kurnool, Kadapa and Anantapur districts. Rajvihar centre in Kurnool city, witnessed unruly scenes with police arresting protesters for causing traffic jams.
