Kinnerasani sanctuary to get another deer park

Park would come up in 500 acres at Gattumalla forest area

Khammam: In a bid to attract more tourists to the Kinnerasani wildlife sanctuary at Paloncha revenue division, the state government has decided to develop another deer park there.

The wildlife sanctuary which houses animals like cheetal, chinkara, chousinghas, sambar, wild boars, gaurs, hyena, jackals, panthers, sloth bear, tigers and black bucks, apart from birds like peafowl, jungle fowl, quails, partridges, teals, nuktas, spoonbills and doves. The sanctuary, spread over 625 sqkm, is a major tourist hub in Telangana.

In addition to the wide variety of fauna, the large range of flora make the sanctuary rich. One can find bamboo, teak, Arjuna and many other trees in the forest.

The tree tops are populated with various migratory birds. The deer park, which was established in 1974, used to have 50 animals initially. Now, the number has gone up to 105.

The government plans to set up another park at Gattumalla forest area for which Rs1 crore was sanctioned. Nearly 500 acres was identified for the park and a special pond will also be built for the drinking water requirement of the wildlife. It has also been decided that about 10 deer from the existing park would be shifted to the new one.
