Google, Facebook recruit via coding test

Google and Facebook to recruit students with talent who could make a difference in their products

Chennai: With the need to select the cream of the students from thousands of engineering graduates in campuses across the country, a few top IT companies like Google and Facebook have migrated from pen and paper based tests to online coding tests and solving puzzles. According to Prof S. Vaidhyasubramaniam, dean (planning & development), Sastra University, Thanjavur, Google conducts coding based recruitment as part of its recruitment strategy.

“A few of our students have taken the online coding based test conducted by Google as part of its campus placement programme,” he said. A placement officer in another deemed university who did not want to be named said that coding based tests helped companies like Google and Facebook to recruit students with talent who could make a difference in their products.

“It is only the web based IT companies that place students using code jams as they have less requirement but are on the lookout for the most brilliant student. Once the coding test gets over, the student has to attend an interview to get selected, sometimes these interviews may be done through Skype or Google Hangout,” the placement officer said. V. Rahul, a B.Tech student, says that solving such online puzzles to get recruitment would help students prove their skills as they could take up the test several times until they crack it, which was not possible in a pen and paper test.
