Reviving posts from the past

Each head post office and sub post office to campaign, envisaging the importance of posts
KOZHIKODE: Does anyone remember the last time they posted a letter? It would certainly be difficult to remember, for who wants snail mail when there’s email? This may be why the Central Government recently issued orders to the Postal Department in all states to conduct regular campaigns and awareness sessions for schoolkids on the working of the department. The project has been taken up as the present generation is totally unfamiliar with post offices, their functioning and the facilities they offer, owing to the influence of emails.
The campaigns will be conducted by head post offices and sub post offices coming under them. The department will also ensure that students post and receive at least two letters a month.
Chief Postmaster General Vijaya Kumar already sees the demise of the post office culture among people. The recent circular to ensure “postal habits” among students will definitely go a long way in making them as well the department tie up with each other to share many common activities.
“It is estimated that the department is suffering a huge loss due to the advent of technology and the inroads made by the private sector in the Department of Communications”, he added.
“As the first phase of campaigning, we are planning to conduct a letter writing competition for students of the schools across the State, which will encourage and inculcate in them the habit of writing letters”, said Jayadevan P., Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Kozhikode- Wayanad Zone. Students will also be educated on the way the department functions.
Sr Preethi of St Michael’s School said the project would definitely be a hit among students who were not familiar with the culture of letter-writing. “Our school will ensure that students take up the initiative in all seriousness”, she said.
