Chennai airport checks intensify on human bomb threat

Police couldn't trace the number quickly because director's land line had no caller ID

Chennai: The schedule of flights starting from Chennai went for a toss on Monday after the city airport director received a call saying at least ‘2 of the 10 suicide bombers landed in Chennai from Pakistan would strike the airport’.

The call landed at the direct line of the airport director H.S.Suresh at around 11.10 am and the caller claimed that he was calling from Karnataka CB-CID.

Speaking in English, the mysterious caller said that at least 10 human bombs arrived in Chennai and two were in the airport. “One will target the building in the airport while the other will carry the explosive in a flight and aim for mid-air blast,” the caller said.

The police could not trace the number immediately because the landline of the airport director had no caller ID. The officer alerted the police and CISF for a BDS check on the entire premises of the airport. All the passengers were screened by the BDS besides all the vehicles entering the airport were also double checked by the police.

This led to the delay in schedules of all the flights. “There were at least 20 minute delay in all the flights originating from Chennai after 11.30 am. The screening of vehicles and passengers are still on,” the police said.
