Chennai:In an effort to boost infrastructure in the Coimbatore corporation limits and extended areas, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Sunday announced a number of projects for the city including the construction of 2,912 homes for the poor and a semi-circular road linking the arterial Mettupalayam Road, Sathyamangalam Road and the Trichy Road to decongest traffic.
The projects are expected to cost the state exchequer at least Rs 2,000 crores, a release said. The Chief Minister said that these projects were in continuation of various infrastructure schemes undertaken over the last three years keeping in view the growing population of Coimbatore, the second big city in the state after Chennai.
The housing project for the poor would be completed at a cost of Rs 443.55 crore while the underground drainage and storm water drains in extended areas of city corporation have been allotted Rs 1,555 crore. Another Rs 125 crore has been allocated for setting up a new integrated bus terminus in the city.
The new integrated bus terminus will be set up at Vellalore at a cost of Rs 125 crore and a project report will be prepared for setting up a truck terminus.
“A project to recycle building waste (refuse) into useful articles will be implemented for the first time in Tamil Nadu at an estimated cost of Rs 12.80 crore,” Jaya said in the release. Besides, new buildings for 12 health centres at a cost of Rs 7.04 cr, development of 20 health centres and setting up of a new centre would be taken up in the textile city.
Announcing the construction of multi-level parking lots, which are expected to come up in three places including busy localities of Town Hall and Gandhipuram, the Chief Minister said that the project would be implemented with private participation at a cost of RS 80 crore and a project estimate was being prepared presently.
A tunnel will be formed at a cost of Rs 100 crore in Periyakomban and Kattal Hills to facilitate a third drinking water project for the city, the release said.
